The Cowboy Action Range
C.A.R.

The Practical Details about the C.A.R. are described below.

The Cowboy Action Range (known as the C.A.R.) was excavated in September of 2011 as the result of my introduction to the Pine Ridge Regulators.   They are a Cowboy Action Shooting (CAS) Club affiliated with the Single Action Shooting Society (SASS).   They have been in operation around the Wabash valley for many years.   ProTEQ is at least the third range location upon which they have held their monthly matches and seems to be a perfect fit.    The C.A.R. is continually under construction with the enlargement of the Berms, the building of safety walls, the erecting of shade structures, the addition of facades, and the expansion of target options.     It is an ongoing project that will continue for years.   The C.A.R. is fully functional now and hosts Matches twice a month.

The C.A.R. is laid out along the the North side of a rectangular valley that runs East to West for 200 yards.    The average valley width is 75 yards.     The C.A.R is cut into the tree covered northern hillside providing a very safe berm backstop.    A nice cool breeze falls out of that hilly woods down onto the firing line.    A 48 car parking lot is 50 yards from Stage 1 and additional parking is available up the hill.     The valley provides 150 yard rifle match capability and would support mounted cowboy events if such a group existed locally.     Most of the excavation on the 8 of 10 stages is now complete.   The shooting lanes vary in width and depth.   The farthest bonus targets would be 30 plus yards from the firing line.   Cable hung moving targets will travel through 3 of the stages both across as a running buffalo and way as a horse thief.    A large arc swinging target will also be added to Stage 1.    All of the current 7 stages have an array of typical  pistol, rifle, and shotgun targets such as cowboys, plates, diamonds, etc.   There are also bottle racks, reactive targets, and bird throwers available.   Evil plans where recently hatched to develop a mine car target running down the hill towards the firing line in Stage 5.

The over all Rail Road Tie project is 66% complete.   The west wall of Stage 5 is 100%, the west wall of Stage 4 is 80%.   The Stage 2 & 3 walls are only 70% complete with one needing realignment.    These walls provide additional safety, sound reduction, erosion control, and an old west appearance.    The wall project within Stages 2 through 5 also expands those shooting lanes capabilities into much more than just Cowboy Action.   During the off days when no matches are held ProTEQ can provide very specialized training opportunities within this walled berms.

The Facade and Porch design / construction is nearly complete on Stages 1 thru 3.

Two more stages located to the west of #7 are under construction and a third east of #1 will be added.   Number 8 was the first berm excavated west of the the original 6 Stages and will have a WALL of steel targets installed during 2015.   Number 7 is now in use as a Speed Stage.    Number 9 will be a Long & Narrow Stage (Alley, Hallway, Jungle walk) providing a surprise scene shooting scenario with several doorways or walls (likely movable) that would reveal hidden targets as you moved into the Stage.

The vision of ProTEQ is to see the Town of Lead Gulch expand along the valley donated by the Brannan Ranch.

This VISIONARY TALE is described in detail with the story on the next page.
